Boise, Idaho – Are You Prepared or Paranoid?

Idaho authors Jana Kemp and Doug Graves hint at this question in their new book Prepared Not Paranoid (Praeger, 2008). In the wake of 9/11, many Americans feel their individual safety is threatened by forces they cannot control. Some take drastic measures and move from metropolitan areas thought to be targets, as we’ve seen with some of our newest Idaho residents. Most however, stay put and try to find ways to protect themselves in their homes, their workplaces, and their communities.

A sense of vulnerability or uncertainty can undermine feelings of safety and security. Today’s dangerous world calls for daily personal power that overcomes paranoia and puts people back in control of their lives and their sense of safety. While most Idahoans feel fairly safe moving about daily life, we have seen an increase in youth-attacks, in home invasion, and drug-related community safety challenges over the last decade.

Drawing on 34 years of law enforcement work and training, co-authors Jana Kemp and Doug Graves present useful information and practical guidelines for keeping yourself, family members, children at school, and co-workers as safe as possible every day. Prepared Not Paranoid presents methods for recognizing challenges or threats, innovative ways of thinking about safety, checklists with actions to take in various settings, and items to have handy when traveling. This book serves as a guide for safe daily living, not as a self-defense manual. The authors raise awareness and offer important information so people feel more confident moving through daily life as safely as possible.

Bookstores and online book-sellers are carrying the book.

Author notes:

Jana Kemp is the founder and owner of Boise-based, 15 year old Meeting & Management Essentials. She is also the author of Moving Meetings (English and Italian); No! How One Simple Word Can Transform Your Life (English, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, Arabic, Chinese); Building Community in Buildings; and Moving Out of the Box.

Doug Graves is the immediate past Deputy Director of the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy. He teaches at the Idaho POST academy and is a senior partner of Law Enforcement Training and Resources (LETR) a law enforcement training company that provides a variety of training resources to law enforcement on a local, state and federal level.
