Family Friendly – Worth Watching
Watching movies together as a family can be a bonding experience and create memories that will last a lifetime. At our house, watching movies also serves as a discussion starter for decision making. I ask such questions as:
What would you do in that situation?
Was that a good decision?
What do you think is going to happen in this movie?
We often connect stories we’ve watched and read to each other and create brief discussions about our observations too. A few years back, a colleague was sharing that his daughter holes up and watches content that seems absent-minded and empty. I shared that our family set a rule for watching that says “If there are no parents in the show and/or the characters spend the whole show yelling at each other, we are NOT watching it.” Here’s why I set the rule: kids need to see good role modeling and life requires parents as well as communications that are kind, firm and effective (which is not yelling).
What does your family talk about after or learn from each thing you watch?
What are your family’s rules for watching?
I’ve also stopped movie-watching when the themes (which my daughter can often tell from the video-jacket, she is amazing) are not happy, healthy or appropriate for us. A house-rule is that if one person doesn’t want to finish watching a film for any reason, we stop the show and move on to find something better. “Put good things in so you experience good” is a phrase I use about what we watch and what we listen to. And boy is it difficult to consistently find GOOD things!
Here is a list of family friendly worth watching titles that you can feel safe sharing with your family members. I’ll highlight the story and the age-appropriateness or interest level of each selection.
