Meeting Pledges At Work
By Jana M. Kemp
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) invited me to speak at their April monthly meeting. At the start of the meeting (and printed right on the agenda for us to follow along) the Pledge of Allegiance was stated in unison, followed by the association pledge.
During the NAWIC pledge-saying, I was reminded of various meeting pledges I’ve said over the years. First of course, was saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America when in school. Then I learned the 4-H pledge that was recited at the start of every club meeting.
As an adult, the Rotary Four-Way test and a variety of association pledges for groups I’ve visited have passed through my lips. And if the World War II phrase “loose lips sink ships” is true, then imagine the power of spoken association and company meeting pledges to change our fates, focus our efforts, and inspire our work.
Here for your pledge-creation inspiration are the pledges I’ve mentioned above.
Pledge of Allegiance: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
NAWIC Pledge: As material for the construction of our building, I pledge the agility of my hands, the ability of my mind, and the integrity of my heart.
4-H Pledge: I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health to better living, for my home, my club, my community, my country and my world.
ROTARY Four-Way Test: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Goodwill and better friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
A pledge is a solemn promise and commitment to thinking, making decisions, and behaving. When we recite a pledge, we are committing to the behaviors and habits spoken to in the pledge. So, this week’s challenge is to bring back to the office in writing the pledges you’ve said at various trade and association meetings.
Action Item: Consider what you and your team are pledging at the start of every internal meeting. Is it to have a great day? Is it to deliver spectacular customer service? Create and record in writing what the pledge is that keeps your team focused, inspired, and motivated.
