Get Out of the Meeting
By Jana M. Kemp

Get something out of every meeting or get yourself out of going to the meeting. We are all short on time and long on project to-do list items.

Before every meeting you are invited to attend find out:

  • Why you are needed at the meeting – what will you be expected to contribute?
  • What you need to bring to the meeting.
  • Whether you can skip the meeting, get the minutes and follow-through on any assignment.

During the meetings you attend, find out:

  • What am I expected to do as a result of being in this meeting?
  • Whether you’ll be needed in future meetings, or whether you can get the minutes.
  • How your team is expected to take action differently as a result of the meeting.

When you attend a meeting, be sure to leave with clear expectations for next actions. Without clearly stated action-steps, miscommunications occur and seem to create more meetings to attend.

“Silence is Golden and Duct Tape is Silver” – unknown speaker, quoted on a business reader board.

“New national security advisor seeks to forge consensus” an Associated Press headline in December 2008. What is your team doing to “forge consensus?”

“Use Technology to Green Your Meetings” says Corbin Ball at www.corbinball.com

“Keep technology from distracting participants during meetings” say several teams of consultants working to improve the meaningfulness of meetings. “Face-time is valuable and should be a productive as possible.”
