Uncovering Hidden Agendas
By Jana Kemp
We’ve all been in meetings where unspoken agenda items prevent meeting productivity. Consider whether you have the political standing in the meeting or in your company to draw out or to name directly what the unspoken items are.
Leaving details out of discussions makes the resulting decisions less effective and sometimes more costly in money or in lost productivity due to people feeling “taken” by a lack of honesty. And calling a meeting for one purpose without disclosing what is already in the works is an abuse of people’s time, talent and expertise.
Hidden agendas only destroy meetings, the potential post-meeting results, and the morale of teams. So, state the agenda items clearly in advance of every meeting. If things change before the meeting is held, share what has changed or what decisions have already been made so that everyone is in-the-know.
